COVER OF THE WEEK

Supergirl, #49, DC Comics

COVER OF THE WEEK RUNNERS UP

Amazing Spider-Man, #619, Marvel Comics

Daredevil, #504, Marvel Comics

Detective Comics, #861, DC Comics

Some weeks it's hard to pick just one comic book for Cover of the Week. This week it was especially difficult with such dramatic artwork on some of my favorite titles. Blood pouring over Spider-Man, an exhausted Daredevil after a street fight and Batman gripping an armed maniac are all powerful images but it was the helplessness of Supergirl collapsed in a hospital hallway that won. I'm always a sucker for a sad ending.

BLACK PANTHER ANIMATED INTRO

Marvel Animation and BET have created a new Black Panther animated series. So far it's only aired in Australia with no US air date or network. X-Men's Storm is in the series so obviously the series follows the current Black Panther storyline. Stan Lee provides the voice of General Wallace and Djimon Hounsou voices the lead role. Every fan boy agrees that Hounsou is the perfect choice to play the Black Panther but we were all hoping for a live action movie.

JUST LISTEN: THE TUTTLE KIDS

This video has been making the rounds. I received it in an e-mail from my cohort Stan. After a little research, I discovered the name of the group and ages of the players:

Michael (8) and Sullivan (10) play a bluegrass version of El Cumbanchero on mandolin and guitar with sister Molly (16). The photo above shows them with bluegrass legend, Ralph Stanley.

Check out their father's website for more info and visit Molly's website for her music and a list of her appearances.

I LOVE SARAH JANE

Working on DSTG!, I run across a lot of videos and stories. Some are interesting and bizarre and others are rare gems. I Love Sarah Jane fits into the latter category; a zombie film but very unique and different from other living dead films. It's a short film written by Spencer Susser & David Michôd and directed by Spencer Susser.

Here's hoping that I Love Sarah Jane is made into a feature film.

TALES FROM THE CRAPPER

Edgar Allan Poe

In 1838 the American author Edgar Allan Poe wrote one of his most famous tales The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, a story about three men adrift in a boat, who survived by killing and eating their companion, a cabin boy named Richard Parker. In 1884, thirty-five years after Poe's death, a yacht called the Mignonette sank in a storm en route to Australia from England. Four of the crew put to sea in an open boat, and three were rescued twenty-four days later. They had survived by killing and eating the fourth member, a cabin boy named Richard Parker. They eventually returned home to a heroes' welcome and received only six months' imprisonment.

JUST LISTEN: TEDDY THOMPSON (PT. 2)

Teddy Thompson comes from a musical family, and while he was inspired by folk music, he grew up listening to Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly. He's stated that these artists influenced his own music, which is a mixture of folk, rock, country and pop music. His lyrics have been compared to his father's, Richard Thompson, but he has his own unique style and covers such themes as love, loss, fame and self-loathing.

MEET ROXXXY, THE SEX ROBOT

If movies have taught us anything, it's that robots want to rule the world. We all know the story, mankind builds robots and eventually the robots rise up to take over earth. Maybe robots like Roxxxy will only take over prostitution and pimps will have to fight a war for their whores. Either way, the future is looking pretty bizarre. Roxxxy made her premier at AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas and has lots of features, except being attractive.

The life-size robotic girlfriend comes complete with artificial intelligence and flesh-like synthetic skin.

"She can't vacuum, she can't cook but she can do almost anything else if you know what I mean," TrueCompanion's Douglas Hines said while introducing AFP to Roxxxy.

"She's a companion. She has a personality. She hears you. She listens to you. She speaks. She feels your touch. She goes to sleep. We are trying to replicate a personality of a person."

Roxxxy stands five feet, seven inches tall, weighs 120 pounds, "has a full C cup and is ready for action," according to Hines, who was an artificial intelligence engineer at Bell Labs before starting TrueCompanion.

The anatomically-correct robot has an articulated skeleton that can move like a person but can't walk or independently move its limbs.

Robotic movement is built into "the three inputs" and a mechanical heart that powers a liquid cooling system.

Roxxxy comes with five personalities. Wild Wendy is outgoing and adventurous, while Frigid Farrah is reserved and shy.

There is a young naive personality along with a Mature Martha that Hines described as having a "matriarchal kind of caring." S & M Susan is geared for more adventurous types.

People ordering the robots online at truecompanion.com detail their tastes and interests much like online dating sites but here, the information is used to get the mechanical girlfriend in synch with her mate.

"She knows exactly what you like," Hines said of Roxxxy, noting that Rocky will also come with personalities.

"If you like Porsches, she likes Porsches. If you like soccer, she likes soccer."

Roxxxy will chat with her flesh-and-blood mate, and touching her elicits comments varying according to personalities.

She is wirelessly linked to the Internet for software updates, technical support and to send her man email messages.

But if you want a Roxxxy of your own, start saving now because she cost $7,000 to $9,000 depending on the features you select.

THE SOUNDS OF TERMINATOR 2

Using nothing but the sounds from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, YouTuber Pogo created a musical tribute to his favorite action movie.

"Each section is composed entirely of sounds from a major scene in the film. For example, the Terminator pounding on the fire escape door is used as a kick drum. Bones breaking play the role of a snare. Electrical disturbance acts as a crash cymbal."

Now turn up your speakers and enjoy the musical styling of breaking bones.

SONY TO REBOOT SPIDER-MAN

Finally some good news about the Spider-Man movies. Sony plans to reboot Spider-Man with a new director and cast. From the official press release:

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

My only concern is that Sony may go the Ultimate Spider-Man route and make Peter Parker too contemporary and ruin the character. Still, the franchise was in desperate need of a new director and cast. Spider-Man 4 is slated for 2012.

WTF? OF THE WEEK

I've been debating on starting this new feature spotlighting the weird and often gross stuff that floats around on the internet. Working on DSTG! leads to some bizarre sites, stories and videos. The post may not exactly fit with the rest of the site but if you're like me (and if you're reading this, you probably are a little like me), then you're intrigued by the freaks, the weirdos and strangeness that inhabits our world.

I'll try to post warnings for some of the future WTF of the Week posts. While this first item isn't exactly gross, it is disturbing and I hope to God, it doesn't inspire a bunch of copycats. A few weeks ago, I did a post featuring tattoos for your teeth. Now some prisoners have figured out how to tattoo the whites of their eyes.

TALES FROM THE CRAPPER

Chairman Mao

After victimizing everyone he could think of, Chairman Mao mobilized the entire Chinese nation to take it out on the sparrows. Sparrows eat cereal crops, and so over a period of forty-eight hours about 80 million Chinese took to the streets and fields and banged woks and gongs until the birds dropped dead of exhaustion. It was a popular move with most people because the Chinese loved fried sparrow. Without the sparrows to control worms and other pests however, agricultural disaster followed. With the natural food cycle altered, 43 million people starved to death over the next three years.
