JUST LISTEN: THE AVETT BROTHERS (PT. 2)

The Avett Brothers have spent years honing their skills as songwriters as well as their musical abilities. Seth and Scott Avett play acoustic guitar and banjo but they also play piano, drums and other string instruments. Both are songwriters, collaborating together and writing individually. They feel they were born to write songs.

“There’s not an option,” explains Seth. “It feels like a living thing, and if we want to keep it alive, we have to nourish it. There are so many things we have to consider now - the stage show, business issues, our relationship to different people and our fans - but at the heart of it is the songwriting and the connection we have with ourselves and others through that writing. It’s an essential and imperative element to our existence.”

“On top of all that, it’s just exciting,” Seth continues. “Scott and I and Bob get these new songs going, and that is our lifeblood. It’s obvious we’ve got to keep rolling with it. Whether the records come out or don’t come out, and whether there’s a market or not a market, the important thing is that we’re writing songs. They’re not just for a release date; they’re for posterity.”

JUST LISTEN: THE AVETT BROTHERS (PT. 1)

The Avett Brothers is made up of Seth Avett and Scott Avett, brothers who play the guitar and banjo with Bob Crawford playing the stand-up bass. Joe Kwon plays the cello on most of their tours.

The brothers were in a rock band called Nemo when Scott Avett began playing acoustic music with some friends at night. Seth Avett soon joined in and they called themselves The Back Porch Project or Nemo Downstairs. They began writing new songs and released The Avett Bros. album in 2000. Nemo broke up and the brothers continued with their own music. In 2002, they released the album Country Was and went on tour.

More albums followed and in 2007 they made their national television debut on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

September 2009 saw the release of their album, I and Love and You. Rolling Stone magazine named them "The Artist to Watch of 2009" and it's easy to see why.
