"In the Ghetto", written by Mac Davis, was originally titled "The Vicious Circle". RCA Records asked Davis permission to change the title before presenting it to Elvis. Initially, it was feared that the song was too political and could damage his reputation but Elvis loved the song and recorded it anyway. Released in 1969, it was Elvis's first Top 10 hit in four years and peaked at number 3.
