THE END OF THE LASERDISC PLAYER

Pioneer announced they will stop the production of laserdisc players, although they will make another 3,000 before shutting production down. My first reaction was, "they're still making laserdisc players?" And if you're like most people, you don't even know what a laserdisc player is.

LaserDiscs followed the advent of the VCR and were the first product to have special features, such as commentaries and documentaries. The discs were expensive, generally costing $40.00 a disc, very large with the cheaper laserdisc players requiring you to manually flip the disc to complete a movie.

As a laserdisc owner, I haven't used my player in years. Studios quit producing laserdiscs in 2000 and I've replaced most of the titles on DVD over the years. Still, it does make me a little sad that laserdiscs are a thing of the past.
