JUST LISTEN: MOJO NIXON (PT. 1)

Mojo Nixon (born Neill Kirby McMillan, Jr.) was born was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is is best known for his psychobilly music. He first paired with Skid Roper in the early 1980's and they released their first album, Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper, in 1985. Their third album, Bo-Day-Shus!!!, featured his best known song, "Elvis is Everywhere." Nixon declared his personal trinity of Elvis Presley, Forhorn Leghorn and Otis Campbell.

Never one to conform, Nixon insulted celebrities in his music. His song "Stuffin' Martha's Muffin" was about MTV VJ Martha Quinn. Debbie Gibson and Rick Astley received ribbing in "Debbie Gibson is Pregant with My Two-Headed Love Child." The duo also targeted other cultural icons and social issues with songs like "Jesus at McDonald's", "I Hate Banks", "Burn Down the Malls" and "The Amazing Bigfoot Diet."

Nixon and Roper parted ways in 1989. Nixon released a solo album in 1990 called Otis, which included the song "Don Henley Must Die." One night while Nixon was performing in Austin, Texas, Don Henley jumped onstage with Nixon to perform the song. Nixon was stunned and asked, "Is Debbie Gibson here too?" Nixon sang the praises of Henley saying, "He has balls the size of church bells!"

He officially retired from music in 2004 but it didn't take. He came in support of Kinky Friedman's campaign for governor of Texas. Nixon recently announced his "unretirement" with the release of his new album, Whiskey Rebellion, a collection of previously unreleased tracks he claims he had found in "an old shoe box full of cassette tapes" under his front porch. To promote the CD, he announced free downloads of his music on Amazon for a three-week period beginning October 7, 2009.

"Can't wait for Washington to fix the economy. We must take bold action now. If I make the new album free and my entire catalog free it will stimulate the economy. It might even over-stimulate the economy. History has shown than when people listen to my music, money tends to flow to bartenders, race tracks, late night greasy spoons, bail bondsman, go kart tracks, tractor pulls, football games, peep shows and several black market vices. My music causes itches that it usually takes some money to scratch."
